Merkel slams China for jailing dissident

German Chancellor Angela Merkel hit out at the Chinese goverment on Friday after a Beijing court jailed Chinese dissident and human rights campaigner Liu Xiaobo for 11 years.

"I regret that the Chinese government still heavily restricts freedom of expression and the press despite great progress in other areas," Merkel said in a short statement.

Liu, 53, was convicted in Beijing of "inciting subversion of state power" after he co-authored a pamphlet last year that called for human rights protection and the reform of China's one-party communist system.

Good that the german government speaks clear on human rights, wish they would do the same more clear regarding the situaion in Tibet, regarding the genocide on Tibetans and the inhuman destruction of there culture and belief and the more than a million Tibetans killed by the chinese.
