Germany beat Ghana to advance to final 16

Germany beat Ghana 1-0 on Tuesday to reach the last 16 of the World Cup. They will now face archrivals England on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Midfielder Mesut Özil scored a second-half goal to ensure Germany's advance in an exciting match that neither team managed dominate.

"We knew it would hard work against Ghana," said Özil. "We have to win every match from here out."

Ghana also qualified as Group D runners-up after Australia beat Serbia 2-1. The west Africans will face the United States in Rustenburg on Saturday.
