Die Currywurst- Curried Sausage

As each of us craves for certain foods, ( Das Essen ) some hard to come by, yet I will introduce you to a fast food dish that is of German origin and quite tasty, ( sehr schmackhaft ) well at least some of us enjoy it!

One person being a fan of this dish is actually the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

The sausage itself is pork, yet what makes this one so unique is rather the sauce that’s used with it, ketchup, or tomato paste blended with curry powder.

The invention was first experimented by Herta Heuwer in Berlin in 1949.

After she got hold of ketchup and curry from British soldiers, by lacking resources after the war, she started mixing these ingredients and selling this on the streets of charlottenburg district, where it became so popular by construction workers whom were rebuilding ( wiederaufbau) the city ( Stadt ) after the war, that she later opened a restaurant that operated till 1974.

Today, currywurst is often sold on the streets all across Germany, yet most popular in the metro areas of Berlin, Hamburg and Ruhr area.

The sauce type varies, some use paprika powder, while some add onions. Its also sold ( Verkauft )at supermarkets so you can prepare it yourself at home, yet the best is actually sold in food booths, while its estimated around 800 million servings are sold in Germany each year.

By tradition, every candidate for (Bürgermeister) Mayor of Berlin is photographed by a currywurst stand and in 2009 the Deutsches Currywurst Museum was opened in Berlin Germany, in celebration of its 60th Anniversary.
